The Challenges of working in International Law Firms in Tokyo

International law firms in Tokyo present a great challenge to any lawyer hoping to practice law here but offer a dynamic and diverse environment for those who succeed. The firms here are quite varied; the largest has about 130 lawyers, the smallest just 2, some have a mixture of foreign-admitted and Japanese-admitted lawyers, some employ only foreign-admitted lawyers. This presents unique challenges to a lawyer wanting to break into this market.

So what do you need?
Experience and language skills are crucial. This is not a market for newly qualified candidates, there is a need for individuals with at least 2 years of post-qualification experience in a relevant practice area. Law is generally of a transactional
nature here, Finance, Corporate and M&A are all areas of interest so choose your practice area carefully. Language ability is also important as the firms are looking for lawyers who can communicate comfortably in English and Japanese.
